Nigeria President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, had declared a national state of emergency on Friday owing to the current disease outbreak ravaging the country. On doing this, he has also approved a sum of NGN 1.9 billion ($ 11.7 million) as emergency fund for the outbreak. This fund will be used to strengthen the combat of the outbreak such as : creation of more quarantine centers, management of the case, tracing of contacts, employment and deployment of more health workers, screening at the major borders, and purchase of needed equipment and facilities.
Nigeria just confirmed seven (7) cases of the disease (3 earlier, 4 recently) since the Liberian man, Patrick Sawyer, came to Nigeria and falling at the airport and , so far, two (2), Nigeria nationals, a nurse and a doctor, have been recorded dead after the death of Sawyer. World health Organisation (WHO) spokesman,Gregory Hartl, stated that all the victims,so far, contracted the disease directly from Patrick sawyer which had made a total of 13 probable or suspected cases of Ebola in Nigeria..
It is devastation and no more news that Nigeria is now tagged an Ebola country, the fact that she is now contributing to its(Ebola) statistics. Lagos, being the most populous city, appox. 21 million people, is the bedrock of the disease in Nigeria, a very awkward beginning for the country. Well, I believe this should have happened in the first place as what was supposed to have been done since Nigeria heard the spread of this outbreak is what she is now doing when the disease has started claiming lives in the country. I remember vividly that Nigeria donated over $800 million for infected country's treat but leaving her own measures to prevent the situation. It is obvious that Nigeria prefers to battle when they arrive than problems to PREVENTING them from happening. Although i am still praying it doesn't get worse, if it does...
