WHO: SIERRA LEONE SEEK IMPROVED HEALTH CARE RESOURCES TO FIGHT EBOLA OUTBREAK

A report reveals the epidemic of the fatal viral disease. Ebola, that has taken over Sierra Leone lately. Due to this, researchers have seek the assistance of World Health Organisation(WHO) in providing improved disease surveillance and diagnostic technologies to better combat the Ebola crisis in West Africa. Although, the actual extent of the outbreak has not been ascertained, the fact majority of the people with fever-like illness depend on self-medication going over the counter. Also, many people are scared of being stigmatized if they are diagnosed of Ebola and the expensive laboratory testing and course of treatment cannot be underestimated. Even if patients agree to be tested, only few laboratories are equipped with complete safety test kits and also, the number of physicians available to the number of people in the country is nothing to home about. For example, taking the statistics of people in Bo city, less than 15 physicians are available compared to the population of more than 150,000 and this is even worse in countries like Guinea and Liberia. This few physician are even reluctant to provide direct care to patients the fact that there is inadequate or poor access to basic protective equipment. Poor communication and information dissemination on preventive measures are another major problems.

Lately, The World Health Organisation(WHO) has announced the establishment of regional control center starting with Guinea where the case is worse. WHO has also organised conferences and summits, meeting with representatives countries where the disease is largely affected such as Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory coast, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone and health experts with Ebola survivors on to get their demands met and curb the outbreak of the disease. It is reported by WHO that, so far, not less than 759 cases of Ebola have been recorded in the major prone countries: Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia including 467 deaths as at June 30th.
