COMMONWEALTH GAMES : NATIONS MEET IN SCOTLAND...




                              Nations from Africa, Asia, Carribean, Mediterranean and Pacific have all gathered in Glasgow, Scotland for the prestigious game, The CommonWealth games. The Commonwealth game is a volutary inter-governemental association of 53 member states, most of which were colonised by Britain. The name was dated back to 19th century, where the British Empire was defined as the "CommonWealth of Nations" by the British liberal politician, Lord Roseberry, in his speech in Adelaide,Australia. As the state under British rule started gaining independence in the 20th century and becoming self-governing, they remained in the CommonWealth and British still maintained the monarch as Head of State.

                               CommonWealth games which is the third largest game in the world after the Olympic and the Asian games features up to 4900 athletes from 71 nations and to compete in 17 sport which includes athletics, aquatics,badminton,boxing,cycling,shooting,squash, weight-lifting,wrestling etc. It is overwhelming that Africa constitute 35% of the participants. Nigeria has , however, has competed in 11 games since 1950 and has won at least 1 medal in every game recording up to 34 in 1994.
